Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, consists of the small island of Tasmania, the largest island of the Australian continent, and several other minor islands. It is today the sixth-most populous country in the world and the fourth-most populous country by total area in Oceania. Economically, Australia is considered to be one of the fast-growing and most developed countries in the world, due largely to its vast natural resources and lack of external political influence. Australia has a diverse geography, with large coastal areas and grasslands, as well as large inland lakes, coral reefs, and arable lands.

The official name of this country is Australia, which came from the words agnus castus, which means 'in the ocean' and the Latin word Aeolius, which means 'of the sea'. The first mention of the name of this country was in the twelfth century, when it was described by the Spanish traveller, Gasparo de Bello, as a kingdom in the west part of Australia. In 1788, while sailing to South Africa for trade, the Portuguese traveler, Christopher Columbus, mentioned the coastal regions of Australia as one of the countries he expected to reach in his voyage around the globe. More recent mentions of Australia include an entry in the Encyclopaedia Australia, a dictionary compiled by John Fielding, and an account of the voyage of Captain James Cook to Australia in the Third Place.

In terms of geographical coordinates, Australia is on the southern tip of the continental divide, which divides the Asia-Pacific into the western Pacific and the Northern American continents. Australia is at the southern end of the australian continent, which is south of the Great Ocean Road and south of New Zealand and Cook Islands. This, together with the eastern Australian and Norfolk Island, is the youngest member of what is known as the World Series of Australia. When it was first proposed by the British explorer, Captain James Cook, Australia was included in the extended British Empire.

Over the years, much has changed in relation to Australia and its role as a colony. It was incorporated into the Commonwealth of Nations after World War II and has thus become one of its major political powers. Independence came for Australia inolonization, when the country became a republic. Queen Elizabeth is Australia's queen, representative of the federal government in the country, and is head of state. Aborigines and settlers made up about 35 per cent of the population, making them one of the most distinct groups of people in the world. In addition to English being the official language, other languages in Australia include aboriginal language (including Birugu, Tai languages, Woollongi and Motu languages), English-het English and Yiddish.

Melvyn Bragg, in his book, Great Britain, Great Australia, considers Australia an island "in the midst of seas" that has "a magnificent arboretum with an exquisite Victorian style of local vegetation, amazing colonial buildings and a green temperate climate". Melvyn Bragg also includes the word "repopulation" in his description of Australia because there are many indigenous tribes living in it. The aboriginal people are known as aborigines in the United States and Canada. They are different from other First World countries people in that they are highly prone to disease and live in places where their ancestors have lived for centuries. They are considered to be an ethnic group rather than a culture.

In the past decade or so, more people have begun to identify themselves with Australian culture and heritage, particularly in terms of clothing, foods, music and so on. The most common symbols used in this regard are the flags - blue for the country of Australia and the ensigma symbol, which depicts the flag in black. Melvyn Bragg states in his book, Great Britain, Great Australia, that although the Australian identity has been greatly influenced by other cultures and influences, it has become its own distinct identity. The book also discusses the multicultural society in Australia and how different communities there are, which allows different people to live and work harmoniously together.
